I went into some detail about keywords and their continued use for photographers and other such artist that use computers for storage. Today we are going to start organizing the imagery.

Prep: To get ready for this endeavor, I will be setting up some folders to move images around into. Now do not over think this, both Mac OSX and Windows have “Pictures” folders already set up for you. I will start with “Pictures” and then go on to “Photography” and then set up folders for the ways in which I will organize these images. I have thought a lot about this and I could use client names (if you have a lot of repeat clientele) but if I do not work for the same clients a lot, this will just get to be too big (client’s names will be a keyword then). I could do genre, but if I really only shoot one genre (fashion, wedding, product, portraiture, etc) this really won’t fix anything. So again the genre will be a keyword as well. You could also do business shots and personal shots, but again these might end up being one sided, and yet again this kind of information will be keywords. So I’ve decide that for me Year and Month might work the best. So the folder diagram for a photograph shoot in January of 2012 might look like this Computer Name->User->Pictures->Photography->2012->January.
